DSP Group's PalmDSPCore® Technology Provides Legerity with a Platform for Next-Generation, DSP-Based xDSL Solutions
AUSTIN, Texas and SANTA CLARA, Calif.—October 30, 2000—Legerity, Inc., a leading provider of silicon solutions for data and voice communications, and DSP Group Inc., (NASDAQ:DSPG), a world leader in the development and marketing of high-performance, cost-effective digital signal processing cores, today announced they have entered into a strategic DSP technology licensing agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, Legerity has licensed DSP Group's PalmDSPCore technology as a platform for developing its next-generation silicon solutions for xDSL communications.
The licensing of PalmDSPCore technology augments Legerity's extensive portfolio of intellectual property, which includes more than 600 silicon and system-level patents. Legerity's core technology expertise encompasses systems architecture; mixed-signal, analog and DSP design; and high-voltage bipolar circuit design. Legerity's proprietary, high-voltage wide-bandwidth process enables unparalleled chip-level integration of data and voice capabilities.
"DSP Group's PalmDSPCore technology gives Legerity a solid DSP foundation for the development work we are doing to deliver highly integrated chipsets for today's DSLAM architecture, as well as for next-generation xDSL solutions based on 'splitterless' architectures," said Russ Apfel, Legerity's chief technology officer. "We chose to license PalmDSPCore technology for its high performance, as well as for its instruction set, which contains instructions that are ideal for integrating control functions that are generally handled by microprocessors."
"We welcome Legerity to our PalmDSPCore family of licensees and are excited that our DSP cores will provide our partner with enabling technology for a new generation of IC solutions, optimized for high-performance xDSL modem products," said Bat-Sheva Ovadia, DSP Group's VP of marketing and business development. "Legerity has the engineering talent, systems knowledge, and intellectual property to make groundbreaking contributions to the xDSL industry, and we are pleased that the PalmDSPCore technology is part of the equation."
PalmDSPCore is the fourth generation of DSP Group's licensable cores in the company's SmartCores™ family. PalmDSPCore is designed for applications, such as broadband modems, voice over IP (VoIP) gateways, high-end telecommunications, wireless communications, multimedia, hi-fi audio implementations, and consumer electronics, that require extremely high data throughput. PalmDSPCore is a high-performance, low-power consumption, and dual MAC parallel architecture. It has three instruction-set categories of single, parallel, and multi-parallel instructions, which provide leading-edge DSP performance, such as two cycles for complex FFT butterfly. It supports both SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data) and MIMD (Multiple Instruction Multiple Data) style instructions, with variable instruction widths (16/32 bit) in a single cycle. This unique instruction set combination achieves optimal performance with maximum code efficiency. The PalmDSPCore is fully synthesizable ("soft core"), process-independent, and easy to implement using any ASIC library.
